Artist's Bio - Poplar Hollow Studio's - Kim Gladfelter
I create handpainted/mixed media folk art with gourds...many of which are grown on my PA farm. I’ve been blessed to exhibit and sell my work at juried art shows in the mid-atlantic region for the last 10 years.
My gourd art creations include OOAK sweet santas and snowfolk, Halloween characters such as pumpkin heads, witches & skellies; whimsical chickens & owls and vintage inspired moons to name a few. I start out with a basic sketch on the gourd. Handsculpted clay and wooden pedestal bases are added to select gourds, but I often create a piece with just the gourd and paint! Every piece is individually handpainted with several layers of acrylic paint giving meticulous attention to detail, followed by a multi-step, hand-rubbed antiquing technique. Embellishments such as vintage style tinsel, mica glitter, & charms add to the old fashioned appeal. Each gourd creation is a signed original.
I am primarily a self taught artist. Inspiration comes from the simplicity of country living on the farm, the changing seasons, an affinity for treasures from a bygone era and holiday traditions...these things are all celebrated in my work. I am truly humbled to be accepted into this wonderful group of very talented artists.
